Big Arenas, Intimate Performance
Following a long, hot tour with the jam-oriented Dead and Company, John Mayer embarked on his own solo tour earlier this summer. Rather than share the night with another act, he has taken a note from his Dead and Company bandmates and opted to split the entire gig into two sets, allowing him to spread out and perform with no constraint on time.
Since the world tour began, the musician has earned praise for his ability to turn massive venues like Madison Square Garden into intimate listening rooms where his songs can resonate with the audience. Mayer’s repertoire vacillates between bluesy guitar jams and smooth vocals, and he has all the room he needs to switch gears between the two moods. In a massive space like the Garden or the AT&T Center, its easy for artists to get lost in the arena atmosphere and simply hammer through their set, but Mayer has taken the time at each tour stop to personalize the performance with an understated stage and highly curated setlist.
The World Tour
The Grammy Winner will draw from a career’s worth of hits when he rolls in to San Antonio, and you can expect emotional moments like “Age of Worry,” in which the accomplished songwriter addresses the passing of time. You’re bound to ear career-defining numbers like “Waiting On The World To Change,” Daughters,” and “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room.” The pop-friendly “Why Georgia” will likely appear on the setlist, and the crowd is sure to respond with enthusiasm when he inevitably sings “Your Body Is A Wonderland.” Although the tour doesn’t coincide with a new LP, Mayer does have a few recent singles that might be heard at the to San Antonio show. He released “New Light” as a single in May 2018. That October, he debuted “I Guess I Just Feel Like” at the iHeartRadio Theater, and announced a 2019 tour just a few months later.
