If you want some laughs on Friday, January 20, 2023, then don’t miss Demetri Martin at the Empire Theatre here in downtown San Antonio, Texas. Demetri has won several awards, written a few books, and starred in a few standup specials – including his latest for Netflix called The Overthinker.
The Joke Machine
A standup comedian, writer, and director, Demetri created and starred in the Comedy Central TV series Important Things with Demetri Martin. Among his books are This is a Book, Point Your Face at This, and If It’s Not Funny, It’s Art. He also wrote, directed, and starred in the movie Dean.
Charline McCombs Empire Theatre
Built in 1914 on the site of the former Rische’s Opera House in downtown San Antonio, Texas, the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre was designed in the style of a European palazzo. It first operated as a vaudeville house and then a motion picture theatre. After years of steady decline, the Empire closed in 1978. Twenty years later, however, a local non-profit collected $5 million for renovation, and today the Empire is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Majestic Theatre
The Empire isn’t the only historic theatre located in the area. Located at 224 East Houston Street in downtown San Antonio, Texas, the Majestic Theatre was built in 1929 by John Eberson. Today, it is home to the Broadway in San Antonio series as well as several live entertainment events.

Upcoming Shows
There are many shows you can catch throughout the year at these two theatres, including several coming up in the coming months. On deck for The Empire is another comedian: Shane Gillis. Shane has appeared on Comedy Central and elsewhere. His appearance in San Antonio will be on February 3. Other standup comedians currently scheduled to take the stage soon include Dan Cummins on February 24 and Heather McMahan on April 1-2.
